Black Pepper Tofu

A bold and flavorful stir-fry made with crispy tofu tossed in a rich and peppery sauce.

Cook Time: 10 minutes

Ingredients
 

  • 1 block extra firm tofu, 14 oz
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch, for coating
  • 1/4 cup neutral oil, for frying
  • 1 shallot, sliced
  • 6 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp ginger, minced
  • 3 scallions, whites and greens separated
  • 4 red chili peppers, sliced
  • Cornstarch Slurry: 1 tsp cornstarch + 1 tbsp water
  • Stir-Fry Sauce:
  • 2 tbsp light soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp dark soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp coarse ground black pepper
  • 1/2 cup unsalted chicken broth or water

Instructions
 

  1. Pat dry the tofu, cut into cubes, and toss with 2 tbsp cornstarch.
  2. Mix stir-fry sauce ingredients in a bowl and set aside.
  3. Heat 1/4 cup oil in a pan and fry tofu until golden. Drain on paper towels.
  4. In the same pan, sauté shallot, garlic, ginger, scallion whites, and chili peppers until fragrant.
  5. Add the sauce and bring to a light simmer.
  6. Mix 1 tsp cornstarch with 1 tbsp water, stir into sauce, and simmer until thickened.
  7. Add fried tofu and toss to coat evenly in the sauce.
  8. Garnish with scallion greens and serve hot with steamed rice. Enjoy!
