Black Pepper Tofu

Black Pepper Tofu
A bold and flavorful stir-fry made with crispy tofu tossed in a rich and peppery sauce.
Ingredients
- 1 block extra firm tofu, 14 oz
- 2 tbsp cornstarch, for coating
- 1/4 cup neutral oil, for frying
- 1 shallot, sliced
- 6 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tbsp ginger, minced
- 3 scallions, whites and greens separated
- 4 red chili peppers, sliced
- Cornstarch Slurry: 1 tsp cornstarch + 1 tbsp water
- Stir-Fry Sauce:
- 2 tbsp light soy sauce
- 1 tbsp dark soy sauce
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp coarse ground black pepper
- 1/2 cup unsalted chicken broth or water
Instructions
- Pat dry the tofu, cut into cubes, and toss with 2 tbsp cornstarch.
- Mix stir-fry sauce ingredients in a bowl and set aside.
- Heat 1/4 cup oil in a pan and fry tofu until golden. Drain on paper towels.
- In the same pan, sauté shallot, garlic, ginger, scallion whites, and chili peppers until fragrant.
- Add the sauce and bring to a light simmer.
- Mix 1 tsp cornstarch with 1 tbsp water, stir into sauce, and simmer until thickened.
- Add fried tofu and toss to coat evenly in the sauce.
- Garnish with scallion greens and serve hot with steamed rice. Enjoy!
